Recycle It!

Mary Clark and her daughter

If you're buying a new household appliance, then what are you planning to do with your old one? In the past, you might have disposed of it at the local refuse centre, given it away to a friend or family member, or simply put it at the back of your garage or shed to rust.

However, under the new Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive), retailers now have to offer a take back service on a like for like basis. This lets you enjoy the new ones without having to worry about disposing the old.

For example, if you buy a new household product which requires delivery from Currys, they will take away your old one as long as you've disconnected it. They will then arrange
for it to be recycled, rather than simply
dumped in a land fill. If it's a product you
can collect from a store, simply take in
your old one and they'll take care of it for
you.
