British Gas; roof mounted solar panels Greener, intelligent boilers
It might surprise you to know that the appliance which uses the most energy in your home is not your TV, computer or fridge, but the boiler. Over time, like most appliances, boilers become less and less efficient - which means that an old boiler won't operate as effectively as a new one, and will end up costing you more.

The latest generation of boilers are designed to be ultra energy efficient and even greener. The new high efficiency boilers available have intelligent controls. These controls differ from conventional timers as they use temperature and the time to determine when they turn on and off, rather than time of day alone. Regulating the temperature in this way is a far more efficient use of your energy.

Being trialled next year is a new type of boiler which can generate its own electricity while producing heat for your home and water. It uses a new type of technology that uses solid oxide fuel cells to convert the gas supplied to the boiler into electricity as well as producing the heat needed for your home. The electricity your boiler produces can either be metered and used as a source of electricity for your household, or it can be sold back to your electricity provider.

These boilers work in a way that minimises carbon emissions so they're good for the environment, and with savings of around £200 on your energy bill, can be good for your pocket too. And they even work during power cuts.
