Lofty ambitions

British Gas: Rick Clark and his 3 children

Insulation is a vital part of energy efficiency, but just getting into the Clark's loft proved tricky, thanks to the roof being only a few feet above the ceiling. The loft already has a thin layer of insulation, but Tony suggested adding to it to bring it up to 250mm thickness. "Without adequate insulation, the heat you're paying for is going straight out of your roof," he added.

Getting in to hot water
Tony also suggested the couple invest in new heating and hot water thermostats, plus thermostatic valves for each radiator for more control over their heat output. "Not every room in the house needs heating to the same level. For example, you might want bedrooms to be a little bit cooler. Being able to turn them up and down means you're not wasting heat and money."
