The Power of the sun

Solar panels don't just generate electricity - you can get solar water heating panels too. As the name suggests, these use the sun's energy to heat your hot water, so you use less electricity or gas.
The panels come in a range of sizes and look a lot like skylights - they can even be fitted flush to the roof tiles, making them even less obtrusive. And they're smaller than photovoltaic panels (PV), with a
typical installation requiring only between two and five square meters of roof. Typical systems are also cheaper than PV, costing between £4,300-£5,000.
Plus, solar water heating is very effective. The system could cut your hot water bills between 50-70%. And they'll work perfectly well in periods of broken sunlight, which makes them very suitable for the average British climate!

GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMPS If you have a large garden, then ground source heat pumps can be an effective option. These use a series of pipes running under your lawn to extract heat which you can then use in your home. |

WIND TURBINES A wind turbine works the opposite way to a fan - using the power of the wind to generate electricity. They're not suitable for everyone, but if you're in a windy part of the country they can be effective even in towns and cities. |
