7 Energy Saving Tips
5. Make greener choices when shopping
Think carefully about your purchases, and opt for products that come with a green bill of health. Under European law, electrical goods such as cookers, washing machines and boilers must be rated for energy efficiency, from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). It's worth noting that since 2004, energy ratings for fridges and freezers have been changed, and now run from 'A++' to 'C' - so that an 'A'-rated fridge on offer in your local electrical store may not look so attractive after all. Even everyday shopping can benefit from a bit of green thinking. Start by cutting down on so-called 'food miles' by avoiding groceries that have travelled great distances to the supermarket. Buy goods that come with no unnecessary packaging, and opt for loose fruit and vegetables in recyclable paper bags. Bring your own shopping bag to avoid wasting plastic carrier bags, and choose alternatives for items such as cleaning products, which may contain ingredients that aren't environmentally-friendly.
